Many people hear the term Chakra and immediately think it is some sort of new-agey concept for hippies and tree-huggers and don’t give it a second thought. Well, if you are one of those people, listen up, because knowing about Chakras and their function can save you a ton of pain, heartache, money, and uncertainty when dealing with your physical health and wellness. You may not realize that seemingly simple ailments like frequent constipation, headache, or recurring sore throat can be directly linked to an imbalance of your Chakras.
The word Chakra literally translates to “wheel” or “disk” in Sanskrit. If you can imagine a swirling wheel of energy in your body where matter meets consciousness, that’s a Chakra! The human body has 88,000 Chakras but has seven main ones containing bundles of nerves that regulate physical and emotional processes in the body. The seven Chakras are aligned starting at the base of your spine all the way to the crown of your head. It is important for the Chakras to remain open, aligned, and fluid to prevent imbalance which can manifest in all areas of life.
The seven major Chakras are broken down into three categories: The Chakras of Matter, Connection Between Matter and Spirit, and The Chakras of Spirit. Let’s break these all down further and take a closer look at how Chakras are affecting you right now.
The first three Chakras are the Chakras of Matter. The first one, specifically, is called the base or root Chakra and corresponds with stability, security, and our basic needs. It includes the first three vertebrae, the bladder, and the colon. When this Chakra is open and free flowing, we feel safe, secure, and fearless.
The second Chakra, called the Sacral, is located just above the pubic bone and below the naval. This is our center for creative and sexual expression and when imbalanced can lead to emotional instability, depression, addiction, fear of change, and sexual dysfunction. When we realign and balance the sacral Chakra, we maintain feelings of abundance, wellness, pleasure, and joy.
The third Chakra of Matter is the Solar Plexus located just above the naval to the breast bone. This Chakra is our source of personal power and is the core of your personality, ego, and identity. A balanced the third Chakra will give a sense of personal power and confidence, boost self esteem, will power, self discipline, and warmth in your personality.
The fourth Chakra stands alone and is considered the Connection Between Matter and Spirit. This is the heart Chakra which unites the lower Chakras of the Matter to the Upper Chakras of the Spirit and brings together the body, mind, emotions, and spirit producing love and connection. When the lower Chakras of the Matter are worked on, it helps to open up the Chakras of the Spirit more abundantly.
The upper Chakras, or The Chakras of the Spirit, start with the throat Chakra. This fifth Chakra includes the thyroid and parathyroid glands, neck, jaw, mouth, and tongue and is associated with verbal expression and the ability to speak one’s highest truth.
The sixth Chakra, better known as the brow or third eye is associated with intuition and is located between the eyebrows. When this Chakra is open, one can tune into and listen to their intuition and heed warning.
The seventh and final Chakra is the crown Chakra and is located at the crown of the head. It is the source of spiritual enlightenment and connection to our higher selves, others, and above all the Divine.
